Ideation

🧠 3.2.1 Idea Generation

At this stage, you will develop your entrepreneurial creativity. We will begin by examining your local area—the problems you are familiar with, underused resources, and the challenges people face every day.

From there, we will generate ideas. Even if they are not yet feasible, the aim is to learn to think creatively while remaining connected to reality.

🌍 Initial Reflection Activity

🧩 First, identify a real problem or local challenge. It could be something you observe every day, such as abandoned land, difficulties accessing services, or food waste.

💡 Then, propose two business ideas that could address this problem. You do not need to think on a large scale—a simple solution is already a great starting point!

🕓 Take five to seven minutes to complete this task and submit your answer.

The following challenges are only a starting point—you are strongly encouraged to identify other challenges in your surroundings. Next, we will show you how to transform these opportunities into concrete business ideas!

🔎 10 Major Challenges and Business Opportunities in Rural Areas

Use these ideas as a starting point for developing impactful local solutions!

1. 🌱 Abandoned or Underused Land

  • Challenge: Large areas of land remain unused because they have been abandoned or there is a shortage of workers.
  • Opportunity: Regenerative agriculture, community gardens, agroforestry, or the local production of aromatic plants, mushrooms, and native seeds.
  • Business example: “Adopt a plot”—small plots of land rented to families or schools.

2. 🥕 Lack of Local Food Production

  • Challenge: Most food is transported from distant locations, resulting in environmental costs and reduced freshness.
  • Opportunity: Local and organic production, food boxes, processed products such as jams and preserves, and cooperatives.
  • Example: A local “zero-waste” preserve brand that uses produce which cannot be sold in shops but is still good to eat.

3. 🚚 Logistics and Mobility

  • Challenge: Difficulties accessing transport, delivery services, or regular travel options.
  • Opportunity: Shared solutions such as rural carpooling, local micro-distribution by bicycle, and collaborative delivery services.
  • Example: A rural delivery app operated by young people using vans after school hours.

4. 💡 Energy and Sustainability

  • Challenge: High energy costs or inefficient use of local resources.
  • Opportunity: Small-scale solar energy production, energy communities, local biomass heating solutions, and energy consultancy services.
  • Example: A business that installs shared solar panels and shares the resulting savings with local families.

5. 🧓 Ageing Population

  • Challenge: Isolation and a lack of services adapted to older people.
  • Opportunity: Home-support services, digital inclusion activities, therapeutic gardens, and senior tourism.
  • Example: “The Time Workshop”—young people exchange hours of support for older residents in return for accommodation or a space to rehearse or study.

6. 🏡 Sustainable Tourism

  • Challenge: Tourism potential is underused or dependent on mass-tourism models.
  • Opportunity: Ecotourism, accommodation in restored houses, cultural routes, and experiences with local producers.
  • Example: “Stay in the Village”—an immersive tourism experience in which visitors participate in everyday rural activities.

7. 📦 Adding Value to Local Products

  • Challenge: Local products are not professionally processed, packaged, or promoted.
  • Opportunity: Branding for honey, olive oil, cheese, nuts, and herbal teas, together with environmentally friendly packaging and storytelling.
  • Example: A brand that packages and sells local products using a modern visual identity and a QR code that tells their story.

8. 🧵 Crafts and Traditional Knowledge

  • Challenge: Traditional arts and crafts are gradually disappearing.
  • Opportunity: Training for young people, online sales, and creative workshops for tourists or schools.
  • Example: “Living Weaving”—online and in-person workshops delivered by local craftspeople, combined with an online shop.

9. 💻 Access to Digital Services and Education

  • Challenge: A lack of digital access or skills in remote areas.
  • Opportunity: Digital training, rural coworking and study hubs, online educational support, and AI workshops for older people.
  • Example: “Rural Digital Club”—a hybrid space offering Wi-Fi, training, printing facilities, and digital support.

10. 🐑 Sustainable Management of Natural Resources

  • Challenge: Unused forestry waste, animal overpopulation, wildfires, and soil erosion.
  • Opportunity: Collection and reuse of waste to produce compost or pellets, rotational grazing, and regenerative beekeeping.
  • Example: A cooperative that collects scrub vegetation for composting and sells the resulting product to local farmers.
