Examples of Sustainable Business

← 5.6.2 — Course outline

To build a successful green venture, you need to understand how sustainability creates economic value. Sustainable businesses do not just minimize harm; they actively create positive environmental and social impacts through their core operations.

Here are four major sustainable business models driving the green economy today:

1. The Circular Economy Model

This model eliminates waste by keeping resources in use for as long as possible. Instead of the traditional «take-make-waste» approach, companies recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of their service life.

  • Key Example: Patagonia. They repair old gear, resell used items through their «Worn Wear» program, and use recycled materials for most of their product line.
  • Core Value: Reduces the need for raw material extraction and builds high customer loyalty.

2. Product-as-a-Service (PaaS)

In this model, customers purchase the service or the benefit of a product rather than the physical product itself. The manufacturer retains ownership, which incentivizes them to make goods that are durable, repairable, and recyclable.

  • Key Example: Signify (formerly Philips Lighting). They offer «Light-as-a-Service» to corporate clients. Customers pay for the light consumed, while Signify maintains and upgrades the hardware.
  • Core Value: Reduces overproduction and aligns company profits with product longevity.

3. The Sharing Economy

This model maximizes the utilization rate of assets by allowing multiple users to access the same good or service. By sharing resources, society requires fewer physical products to be manufactured.

  • Key Example: Zipcar or local tool libraries. Instead of every household buying a car or a power drill that sits idle 95% of the time, users rent them only when needed.
  • Core Value: Lowers the carbon footprint of consumption while saving money for consumers.

4. Eco-Efficiency and Clean Tech

These businesses focus on developing technology or processes that drastically reduce resource consumption, energy use, and emissions compared to standard industry alternatives.

  • Key Example: Tesla (in automotive energy) or Oatly (in food production). Oatly provides a plant-based dairy alternative that requires significantly less land and water, and emits fewer greenhouse gases than traditional dairy.
  • Core Value: Solves modern environmental crises through technological innovation and scalability.
